The Jetsons: sexism in cartoons

The Jetsons is one of the firsts cartoons I watched. This family is just one stereotype after another, but lets focus on the mother of the family, Jane Jetson. She is the "classic" housewife, she´s the one who worries about the kids, what they have for breakfast, where are they going when they go out of the house, etc. Jane is worried about her look and her age, because she wants to be pretty and young.

In the opening of The Jetsons, George Jetson is driving to the kids´ school and then he drives to a shopping center where he leaves his wife, but first he gives her five dollars, but she takes all the wallet and goes out of the car.

It´s true that this cartoon is from the 60´s, but they were on TV until almost the year 2000, so I think that it was a huge irresponsability to keep this cartoon on TV when it represents a society where women supposed to be “pretty housewives”.

  1. I never saw jetsons but i think that if the roles of gender are very noticeable, the series should not have followed on TV.
